A leader in transportation technology and autonomous research, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University opened its rural test track and demonstrated its autonomous vehicles Tuesday, Nov. 1. One of the only rural tracks in the nation, the university unveiled a unique fleet of connected self-driving shuttles to be used for testing and developing advanced technologies for public transportation. Once testing is complete for the next phase, the vehicles will be cleared for deployment between the university’s campus and downtown Greensboro–allowing riders to experience leading autonomous innovation first-hand.

State agency leaders and industry partners are celebrating 40 high school and 20 college students’ completion of the 2022 N.C. Clean Energy pre-apprenticeship and internship program at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University.
The program – the first of its kind in the nation – is committed to equipping the next generation of potential clean energy talent with professional training and skills development in various topics, including solar panel installation, renewable energy, HVAC and architectural design.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is responsible for the safety of 13,500 bridges in the state. According to Ali Karimoddini, Ph.D., associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, each of those bridges, regardless of their condition, is inspected at least once every two years, in accordance with the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS). That adds up to a lot of time, personnel and money to ensure the safety of North Carolinians and visitors.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a three-year $550,000 grant to Narayan Bhattarai, Ph.D., an associate professor of bioengineering at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, to research metal-composite biomaterial that will significantly reduce the inflammation and scar formation of wounds, leading to more effective healing for patients. Bhattarai is the sole principal investigator on the grant titled, “Biodegradable Composite Nanofiber Meshes that Contain Degradable Metal Particulates.”

This past week, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University’s Aggie Autonomous Auto (A3) team completed the four-year Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) AutoDrive Challenge in Mcity, Michigan. Throughout the four-year competition, the team converted a standard electric vehicle to level-four autonomy. The team’s success earned N.C. A&T a spot to compete in Phase II of the SAE AutoDrive challenge.

One of the spring semester’s marquee events, HACKNCAT The Remix, boasted 22 teams consisting of over 100 competitors from the College of Engineering and College of Science and Technology, representing six undergraduate programs.
