EAST GREENSBORO, N.C. (Nov. 20, 2025) — North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University Assistant Director of Student Activities Veronica Hairston ‘09, ‘17, has received the Erskine B. Bowles Staff Service Award, one of the highest honors presented to employees across the University of North Carolina System.

The award, established by the UNC System Staff Assembly, recognizes exceptional service, leadership and commitment to improving student experience. Named in honor of former UNC System President Erskine Bowles, the award highlights staff members who demonstrate superior dedication to public service and to their campus communities.

Hairston, who has served N.C. A&T for nearly a decade in various professional roles, said receiving the award is both humbling and affirming.

“I don’t do this work for recognition,” said Hairston. “I do it because I believe in our students and in the community we build here. This award reminds me that the work matters.”

Hairston first joined A&T as an undergraduate student in 2005, earning her bachelor’s degree in 2009. She later returned for a master’s degree in adult education, which she completed in 2017. Her higher education career includes experience in daycare programs, youth development spaces, and collegiate student support roles.

In 2016, Hairston joined the Office of Student Activities where today she serves as advisor to the Student Government Association in which she was active as an A&T student.

Hairston’s leadership philosophy centers on challenging students to grow while providing the support needed to navigate leadership responsibilities. Students and colleagues often describe her influence as motivating, impactful, and transformational.

“Veronica is a valuable part of the student experience,” one nomination letter read. Another praised her contributions as “not only exemplary, but enduring.” Chancellor Emeritus Harold L. Martin Sr. also submitted a letter supporting her nomination.

Hairston emphasized that the honor reflects the collective dedication of A&T’s staff community.

“Sometimes you have to show people your value,” she said. “Our work is essential, and it deserves to be seen and celebrated.”

Hairston is also a devoted wife and mother. Her young son often accompanies her to evening campus events, where he witnesses the passion and energy she pours into her work. She hopes he will one day choose to attend a historical Black college or university, continuing the tradition that shaped her life and career.

From student leader to staff mentor and award recipient, Hairston has built a legacy rooted in service, balance and commitment to uplifting others. Her contributions continue to shape the leadership journey of countless Aggies and strengthen the university community she proudly represents.

Hairston joins two other A&T staff members who have received this award: Billy Edringston in 2014 and James Griffin in 2015.
