EAST GREENSBORO, N.C. (Nov. 19, 2025) – North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University’s Theatre Arts Program will open the holiday season with the musical “The Gift of the Magi,” inspired by the beloved short story by Greensboro, North Carolina, native Sydney Porter, best known as O. Henry.
Originally published in 1905, O. Henry’s story became one of his most celebrated works through his naturalistic detail, witty narration and signature surprise endings.
Set at Christmastime in New York City, the story follows a young couple, Jim and Della, who are out of work and penniless. Each sacrifices their most treasured possession — she, her long hair; he, his heirloom pocket watch — to buy the other a gift for Christmas. Their selfless gesture creates one magical moment, an aura of warmth and generosity amid the cold, impersonal winter city. This classic, holiday story with lyrics by Richard Adler and a book by Wilson Lehr, crafts a moving story of love, poverty and the spirit of giving.
Under the guidance of Xulee Vanecia J, N.C. A&T theatre arts instructor and director, the production brings to life the poignant holiday musical, preserving O. Henry’s timeless tale of love and sacrifice that has inspired countless adaptations in film, television and theater.
These performances will take place at the Paul Robeson Theatre on A&T’s campus. Admission is $17 for adults, $11 for senior citizens and non-A&T students, and $6 for children 12 and younger. A&T students receive free admission with their Aggie One Card. The performance dates and times are:
- Thursday, Nov. 20, at 7:30 p.m.
- Friday, Nov. 21, at 7:30 p.m.
- Saturday, Nov. 22, at 3 and 7:30 p.m.
- Sunday, Nov. 23, at 3p.m.
The Gift of the Magi is a family-friendly production and appropriate for young audiences.
