EAST GREENSBORO, N.C. (Feb. 18, 2025) – The University Galleries at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University will host the Curator’s Gallery Talk Series: ART Your Lunch!

The program, “Introduction to University Galleries – Learning to Look,” will be held Thursday, March 20, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in the Dudley Memorial Building, 202 University Circle.

The discussion will feature Amy Schwartzott, Ph.D., an associate professor at N.C. A&T and curator of the University Galleries, who will explore the big ideas and broad themes woven throughout the works on display. She has curated exhibitions both nationally and internationally, including in Cape Town, South Africa, and Maputo, Mozambique.

This presentation launches a series of art talks, ART Your Lunch!, scheduled around the lunch hour. The series aims to discuss diverse thematic ideals for a greater understanding of art and expose the public and A&T community to the university’s rich resources.

Schwartzott earned her Ph.D. in African art history from the University of Florida. Her ongoing research on contemporary Mozambican visual culture and artists who use recycled materials as media has earned her a Centre for Conflict Studies Fellowship and two Fulbright awards. Her recent publications include The Art of Emergency: Aesthetics and Aid in African Crises, which received an Honorable Mention for the 2021 African Studies Review Prize for the Best Africa-focused Anthology or Edited Collection, as well as articles in ń Tydskrif vir Afrika-letterkunde/A Journal for African Literature (South Africa) and Critical Interventions: Journal of African Art History and Visual Culture.

“This program beautifully complements the ongoing exhibition,” said Schwartzott. “A quote by Mattye Reed, former curator, director and namesake of University Galleries’ African collections, creates a great frame for this lecture and underscores one of our important University Galleries missions: ‘This is really a teaching museum: That way you can get the feel of things.’”

This event is free and open to the public. The University Galleries hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday by appointment. Admission is free. Group tours are welcome.
