A&T Mourns Legendary Alumnus Alvin Attles

EAST GREENSBORO, N.C. (Aug. 21, 2024) – North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University alumnus, basketball legend and NBA icon Alvin Attles '60 passed away today at 87.

Attles was one of North Carolina A&T’s most acclaimed alumni; the university retired his number in 2015.

“Alvin Attles stood for everything we want our students to be – accomplished, a lifelong learner and a servant leader. He was one of our most beloved alumni, and Aggies around the world are deeply proud of the impact he not only had at A&T, but in the NBA over a legendary, unparalleled career,” said Chancellor James R. Martin II. “We will always remember him as a highly competitive team leader who commanded the basketball court and led our men’s basketball team to consecutive CIAA titles in 1958 and 1959. He was the first person in the history of our men’s basketball program to have his number retired, as well as our first alumnus to win an NBA title and earn enshrinement into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

“When we see his No. 22 jersey in the rafters at Corbett Sports Center, we remember his dedication to our university and proud legacy of helping others achieve their dreams. His loyalty to the Warriors was matched only by his loyalty to his alma mater, and he exemplified Aggie Pride in everything he did.

“We join his family and loved ones in mourning a man who touched so many lives over the years. He will be deeply missed in Aggieland.”
