Aggie Source Food Pantry Wins First Place in 2023 NC Collegiate Hunger Challenge

EAST GREENSBORO, N.C. (Feb. 2, 2024) – North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University’s Aggie Source Food Pantry has won first place in the 2023 NC Collegiate Hunger Challenge among 21 four-year public colleges and universities, earning $5,000 to provide resources to students facing food insecurity.

Launched in collaboration with the College of Agricultural and Environmental Science and Division Student Affairs, Aggie Source Food Pantry has served the N.C. A&T campus community since 2019.

“The Aggie Source Food Pantry is a resource for students at N.C. A&T, as it provides them with fresh produce, toiletries, canned goods and professional clothing,” said Sherelle Wofford, Aggie Source Food Pantry coordinator. “Students always have a place to go if they are in need help or are running low on essential items.”

Since opening, Aggie Source Food Pantry has aimed to reduce the pressure upon students who may face hunger, as food insecurity is at an all-time high within college communities. A&T students are allowed to shop at the pantry twice a month for canned goods, non-perishable items and hygiene products.

Aggie Source Food Pantry also supports the campus by providing students, faculty, and staff with the opportunity to volunteer and give back to our community, furthering the mission of service and engagement.

The 2023 NC Collegiate Hunger Challenge – a collaboration between Food Lion Feeds and NC Campus engagement – took place during the fall semester of the 2023-24 academic year.

As part of the challenge, student volunteers were expected to participate in two ambassador video calls each month, plan and implement campaign activities, creatively promote all campaign components, and communicate project details and implementation to the Food Lion Feeds team.

Tayler Scott, a second-year Honors College student studying biology, led the Aggie Source Food Pantry effort with the help and support of fellow students, staff, alumni and the community.

“While participating in the NC Collegiate Hunger Challenge, I realized that supporting our university food pantry goes beyond victory,” said Scott. “It’s about nurturing a caring community and ensuring no student encounters the hurdle of hunger on their educational path.”
