Victoria Harris, a fashion merchandising and design student, has already made a name for herself.
Harris came to North Carolina A&T with little knowledge of sewing but will graduate Saturday with a successful online design company, ShopBlvssom.
ShopBlvssom, which features clothing, interiors and art, and her appearances at fashion weeks in Washington, New York and around the state, the Charlotte native is well on her way to achieving her goal – a career in the fashion industry.
Recently, Harris won the college designer showcase at Greensboro Fashion Week, showing six different “looks” that she created specifically for the show. This fall and winter, she’ll enter two more shows with original designs. In the spring, she says, ShopBlvssom will feature prom wear that she has designed.
For giving her the drive and the skills to compete at this level, Harris credits the talents she inherited from her grandmother and the coaching she received from her fashion merchandising professors in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences.
“N.C. A&T let me come in and express myself,” she says. “At first, I didn’t think I wanted to be a designer because I didn’t really want to sew, but then I took Apparel Construction 1. I made my first shirt in that class, and I was actually shocked that I’d done it! After that, I started making clothes for myself.”
Harris is currently an intern with Kontoor Brands (formerly VF Corporation) working on the design team for young boys, a role she plans to continue after graduation.
“The fashion merchandising and design department has been my home away from home,” she said. “After graduation, I’m going to continue to grow.”
