EAST GREENSBORO, N.C. (Nov. 18, 2019) – The Weaver Foundation has committed $1.5 million to establish the H. Michael Weaver Endowment in International Programs at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University.
“To retain its lofty position among our nation’s universities, N.C. A&T needs a vibrant study abroad program to assist in the recruitment of highly qualified students,” said Mike Weaver, who established Weaver Foundation in 1967 with his father, Greensboro businessman Herman Weaver. “Our A&T students need travel opportunities to further expand their education. Unfortunately our state has not been able to fill this need.
“This endowment gift has been on the Weaver Foundation wish list for a long time and we are delighted that time has finally become achievable,” he said.
North Carolina A&T State University students participating in global experience and education abroad programs are eligible to receive financial support from scholarships designated for this purpose, if eligible.
“North Carolina A&T State University and the Weaver Foundation share a commitment to those who learn, live and work in this community,” said Loreatha Graves, director of the Office of International Affairs. “Through the foundation’s generosity, more of our students will have the opportunity to develop the sense of global citizenship that comes from the immersive experience of studying abroad.”
Awards like this are vital to many students as some are still unable to participate because they do not have enough to cover the cost of study materials, insurance, transportation and related incidentals.
The amount of available funding for global experience and education programs has not kept pace with the increasing number of N.C. A&T students seeking these opportunities. For the 2013-14 academic year, 45 students participated in this programs. For the 2018-19 academic year, the number swelled to 242.
The H. Michael Weaver Endowment will not only help to meet the funding needs of N.C. A&T students who might not otherwise be able to participate in global experience and education abroad programs, it will also align with the foundation’s purpose and mission to benefit and enhance the quality of life for the residents of the Greater Greensboro community.
H. Michael Weaver Endowment awards will be available to students who are accepted, enrolled and confirmed in a university-approved program, classified as sophomore or above meeting all academic and good standing requirements.
Eligible students can apply for scholarship awards from the endowment. The Office of International Affairs will review all applications and send recommendations to the Office of the Provost for final approval.
