BGMM Featured in Documentary of the 100-Year Music Program; Honored with Award

EAST GREENSBORO, N.C. (July 30, 2019) – In honor of the 100th anniversary of the music program at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, the award-winning Blue and Gold Marching Machine has found fame on the silver screen as well as the football field. The renowned, high-stepping, show band was the featured subject of a documentary titled, “The Blue and Gold Marching Machine.”

“Having the Randolph Community College Photojournalism class document the 100th anniversary of the program here at N.C. A&T was definitely a memorable experience. Often, the community enjoys the finished product during half-time performances, but do not get the opportunity to see the hours of work behind the scenes,” said Dr. Lamon Lawhorn, assistant director of bands. “The students from RCC became like family as they attended rehearsals and performances dating back to the first day of band camp. They truly captured the essence of the Blue and Gold Marching Machine.”

The documentary was submitted for inclusion in numerous film festivals across North Carolina and other states. To date, the documentary has been selected for inclusion in the Longleaf Film Festival in Raleigh; the Joedance Film Festival in Charlotte; and the Cape Fear Independent Film Festival in Wilmington.

Photojournalism students, led by Jay Capers, photojournalism and multimedia instructor at Randolph Community College in North Carolina, spent the previous season shadowing the band, members, leaders and program directors for content.

In addition to being accepted, the film won “Best Documentary” at the Cape Fear Festival. A screening of the 17-minute film is being planned for the fall.
