N.C. A&T Student Honors Convocation to be Held Wednesday

In celebration of undergraduate students with distinguished academic records, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University will hold its annual Student Honors Convocation from 10 a.m.–noon, Wednesday, April 12. The event will be held in the Richard B. Harrison Auditorium.

N.C. A&T senior computer science major, Angelica Willis will deliver the keynote address. With a drive for academic excellence, Willis is a strong advocate for computer science education and diversity in STEM. Recently named a Stanford University Innovation Fellow, she has been actively demonstrating the program’s goal of encouraging its fellows to take the lead and increase campus engagement with innovation, entrepreneurship, creativity and design thinking.   

Willis is also a student ambassador to the White House through the White House HBCU All-Stars program. In 2016, she was honored by former President Barack Obama as one of nine, nationally chosen individuals as a White House Champion of Change for Computer Science in Education.

As captain of A&T’s winning Black Enterprise TechConneXt Summit BE SMART hackathon team, Willis was instrumental in creating and developing a fully functional IOS application that helps users discover all-things relative to the black experience while located anywhere in the nation.

In addition to paying tribute to students with grade point averages of 3.25 and higher, the university will present two awards during the program.

The University Award for Academic Excellence will be given to an undergraduate senior with a minimum cumulative GPA of 4.00. This award also recognizes the integration of academic excellence with other aspects of their lives that may include leadership, community service, arts, athletics and career achievement. Candidates for the University Award may have previously received recognition from campus, local, state, national or international organizations.

The Chancellor’s Award for Academic Excellence will be presented to an undergraduate student for the integration of academic excellence with other areas, including leadership, community service, arts, athletics and career achievement. Candidates for the Chancellor’s Award must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.75 on a scale of 4.00, along with other criteria.

Classes are canceled from 10 a.m.–noon to allow the university community to participate.
