N.C. A&T Takes Top Spot at Honda Campus All Star Challenge Qualifying Tournament; Heads to National Championship

Greensboro, N.C. (Feb. 15, 2017) – A team of outstanding undergraduates led North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University last week to a first-place finish in the prestigious Honda Campus All Star Challenge (HCASC) national qualifying tournament.

The “Jeopardy”-style academic competition covers a broad range of categories including science, literature, history, geography, the arts and more. N.C. A&T was one of 48 teams to move forward in the competition, and will now take part in the national championship tournament April 8 – 12 in Los Angeles.

“The Honda Campus All-Star Challenge gives some of our best and brightest students the opportunity to showcase their knowledge in a highly competitive environment, so our students are always excited to participate,” said Chancellor Harold L. Martin Sr. “We’re grateful to Honda for providing this premier academic showcase, and very proud of our team’s performance at Fayetteville. We are rooting for their success in Los Angeles!”

N.C. A&T has participated in 27 of the event’s 28-year history. Its first-place finish in the qualifying tournament hosted by Fayetteville State University was based on a 3-1 record in round-robin competition, capped by a 265-190 win over Benedict College in the championship round.

“Earning a seat at the National Championship Tournament is no easy feat, and we congratulate each and every student for displaying the drive and determination necessary to do so,” said Steve Morikawa, vice president, Corporate Relations and Social Responsibility, American Honda. “Over its 28-year history, Honda Campus All-Star Challenge has become a multi-generational community event, and we look forward to hosting the students and providing their families with an opportunity to watch them compete in California.”

Celebrating HBCU academic achievement, HCASC is one of Honda’s largest and longest running philanthropic initiatives in the United States. Since 1989, the program has impacted the lives of over 100,000 HBCU students across 22 states.

The final round of the 2017 National Championship Tournament will be live-streamed on Monday, April 10, beginning at noon via HCASC.com. A full list of the 48 qualifying teams is also available online.
