EAST GREENSBORO, N.C. (Jan. 16, 2025) — The North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University Jazz Ensemble has been named one of four semi-finalists in the third annual HBCU Jazz Combo Challenge. This competition, hosted by the Monterey Jazz Festival in California, will determine which Historically Black College and University (HBCU) jazz combos will perform at the 68th Monterey Jazz Festival, set for Sept. 26-28, 2025.
Joining N.C. A&T in the semi-finals are Elizabeth City State University, Florida Memorial University and North Carolina Central University. Supporters can cast daily votes through Jan. 23 to help A&T advance to the finals. The three schools with the highest votes will move forward, and the winning combo will be selected by a panel of jazz adjudicators.
The Monterey Jazz Festival, founded in 1958, highlights jazz as an essential part of America’s cultural heritage. It brings together musicians, composers, and emerging talent, providing a platform for young artists to share their work.
Under the leadership of Jonovan Cooper, DMA, the N.C. A&T Jazz Ensemble performs throughout the year at various events across the state and nation. Their diverse repertoire spans big band classics, bebop, fusion, and more, showcasing the ensemble’s versatility and talent. In addition to a large big band, the group features smaller jazz combos and vocal jazz ensembles, offering audiences a variety of musical experiences.
“This is an incredible opportunity for our students to display their hard work and dedication,” said Cooper. “We are grateful for the chance to compete and encourage everyone to vote and show their support for our ensemble.”
Supporters are encouraged to vote here daily through Jan. 23.
