03/17/2025 in College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, History and Political Science, Honors College
EAST GREENSBORO, N.C. (March 18, 2025) – North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University’s Jeanne Clery Act Compliance Team, Title IX Office, Judicial Affairs/Student Conduct, Office of Student Activities and Campus Involvement, and the Office of Employee Relations are partnering to offer training on the Stop Campus Hazing Act on Thursday, March 20.
This free training, which is open to faculty, staff and students, will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Deese Ballroom at the Student Center.
The training will explain the Stop Campus Hazing Act (SCHA) and new hazing reporting requirements under the Clery Act. It will also explain the investigatory and disciplinary process as an allegation of hazing makes its way through the Office of Student Activities, the Office of the Dean of Students, and/or Employee Relations.
A panel of speakers – including Clery Compliance Officer Ashley Benefield, J.D., MSW, LCSW, Title IX Investigator Tyrone Joyner, Director of Judicial Affairs Zachary Cammack and representatives from the Division of Human Resources and Office of Student Activities – will discuss the legal implications if an incident rises to the level of criminal charges.
Additionally, the University Police Department is using its social media platform accounts to provide resources and information leading up to this training.
In December 2024, President Biden signed into law the Stop Campus Hazing Act. This law requires colleges and universities to include hazing incidents in their annual security report (aka the Clery Report) to help students and their parents make informed decisions about joining any campus organizations by requiring colleges to publish their institution's hazing prevention policies and names of organizations that have violated them. The law aims to reduce hazing incidents by establishing campus-wide, research-based hazing prevention programs.
“The SCHA also requires us to make publicly available, beginning in December 2025, a Campus Hazing Transparency Report of organizations who have violated our hazing policies. Hazing stats will be first included in our 2026 Annual Security Report of stats gathered in 2025,” said Benefield.
“We have always offered hazing training on campus, and those trainings will continue,” she said. ““This training is to notify the campus community of our new reporting and disclosure requirements under this new law and to dispel the myth that hazing only applies to Greek organizations. We will emphasize that these reporting and disclosure requirements apply to all groups, including athletics, academic honor societies and even unregistered groups.”
