A&T to Host Two Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Events

EAST GREENSBORO, N.C. (Jan. 23, 2025) – North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University will host two free events celebrating the life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The theme for each is “Mission Possible: Protecting Freedom, Justice, and Democracy in the Spirit of Non-Violence.”

The Martin Luther King Jr. Oratory Contest will be Tuesday, Jan. 28, at 7 p.m. in Harrison Auditorium, 1009 Bluford St., Greensboro. N.C. A&T students will present original compositions to vie for a first-place prize of $500, second-place prize of $250 or third-place prize of $150.

An intercollegiate celebration will take place Wednesday, Jan. 29, at 7 p.m. in the Deese Ballroom at the Student Center, 1403 John W. Mitchell Drive, Greensboro. Light refreshments will be served.

Following welcomes from Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs Tonya Smith-Jackson and representatives of Greensboro College, Guilford College, Greensboro Technical Community College and the University of North Carolina-Greensboro, the N.C. A&T University Choir will perform “Lift Every Voice and Sing” and a selected hymn.

Each institution will present a Martin Luther King Jr. Service Award and A&T will recognize this year’s oratory contest winners.

A grounding and call to action will conclude the celebration after an activism roundtable led by students and staff.
