EAST GREENSBORO, N.C. (Oct. 17, 2024) – North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University’s Lyceum Series, in collaboration with the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (CAHSS) University Jazz Ensemble, is set to host an evening of soulful jazz featuring Grammy Award-winning saxophonist Kirk Whalum. This event, open to the public, will take place Friday, Oct. 25, at 7 p.m. in Harrison Auditorium, 1009 Bluford St.
The Lyceum Series is a culturally diverse showcase of performing arts and expressions, bringing world-class talent to campus through art, music and culture. Past headliners include Sheila E. and The E. Family, the Russian National Ballet Theatre, Mary Mary, the Chinese Golden Acrobats, and Tami Lee Hughes. This year, Whalum's performance of his classics will feature a collaboration with the University Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Jonovan Cooper, DMA.
With a career spanning more than 25 albums, Whalum’s musical journey is marked by a unique blend of faith and soul. His signature sound is showcased in the Grammy-nominated collaboration with pianist Bob James, his celebrated Gospel According to Jazz series, and a trio of albums with the supergroup BWB alongside guitarist Norman Brown and trumpeter Rick Braun. Whalum’s artistry has also been featured with legends such as Barbra Streisand, Quincy Jones, Al Jarreau, and Larry Carlton.
“Having Kirk Whalum on campus is a tremendous honor for our students and the entire community,” said Cooper. “Our students have been diligently preparing for this moment, and it’s a privilege to share the stage with such an inspiring musician.”
The University Jazz Ensemble at North Carolina A&T features a large big band, smaller jazz combo, and a vocal ensemble, representing many disciplines across the university like music, biology, engineering and pre-law.
In addition to his performance, Whalum will conduct a masterclass for A&T music students Thursday, Oct. 24, and a second masterclass that is free and open to the public Friday, Oct. 25, at 3 p.m. in Harrison Auditorium.
Tickets for the Oct. 25 lyceum performance are available at the University Ticket Office and online.
