EAST GREENSBORO, N.C. (Sept. 14, 2023) – Vice President Kamala Harris – the first woman and first historically Black college or university (HBCU) graduate to hold that role – will visit North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University on Friday, Sept. 15, as part of her “Fight for Our Freedoms” college tour.
She'll speak to a student audience of Aggies “on key issues that disproportionately impact young people across the country – from reproductive freedom and gun safety to climate action, voting rights, LGBTQ+ equality and book bans,” according to a White House news release.
North Carolina A&T is one of about a dozen tour destinations for the vice president, who will be accompanied by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Michael Regan. A N.C. A&T alumnus, Regan is the former secretary of North Carolina’s Department of Environmental Quality.
Regan and Oscar-winning producer, actor and entertainment reporter Terrence J, also an A&T alumnus, will co-moderate a discussion with Harris that will include questions from students in the audience.
“This generation is critical to the urgent issues that are at stake right now for our future,” said Harris. “It is young leaders throughout America who know what the solutions look like and are organizing in their communities to make them a reality.
“My message to students is clear: We are counting on you, we need you, you are everything.”
As America’s largest HBCU for the past decade, A&T's record-setting enrollment of 13,883 this year is the largest student body ever enrolled at a historically Black campus. Its growth in enrollment has been accompanied by A&T's rapid ascent as a doctoral, research, land-grant university.
Other stops already announced on the tour include Hampton University, Morehouse College, University of Wisconsin-Madison, College of Southern Nevada and Northern Arizona University. Additional campus visits and details for media to RSVP will be available in the coming days.
