N.C. A&T Moves to Virtual Parking Passes

EAST GREENSBORO, N.C. (May 24, 2021) – Parking and Transportation Services at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University has transitioned to the entirely virtual License Plate Recognition (LPR) system for the 2021-22 fiscal year.

The LPR System is a digital system that provides virtual permits through a vehicle’s license plate instead of a physical printed permit.

“A number of universities in the UNC System have moved away from physical permits,” said Dave Pitts, director of Parking Services. “The LPR system will save us the costs for printing and mailing physical tags, which has been reallocated to enhance the technology of enforcement vehicles and other equipment.”

Beginning July 1, faculty and staff must have the updated virtual parking permits to park on campus. Physical permits or decals are only required for Reserved, Obermeyer Parking Deck and university-owned off-campus apartments. When returning to campus, students also need to register their license plate to park legally on campus. Faculty, staff and students can register their license plate here.

Because of this new system, a vehicle’s rear license plate must be showing. No pull-thru or back-in parking will be allowed. The back license plate will be captured by cameras mounted on enforcement vehicles and scanned like a barcode. When read, the numbers on the license plate are automatically referenced against the parking database to verify a valid permit and corresponding parking lot privileges.

When purchasing a virtual permit, a vehicle’s license plate information is registered into the online parking system, which will generate a digital permit recognized through the parking database, granting immediate parking privileges. Faculty and staff who may drive different vehicles to work should have each vehicle registered. Permits can be purchased by credit or debit card, payroll deduction or in-person with cash.
