North Carolina A&T Moving to Condition 1 at Midnight Tonight

By Todd Simmons / 09/26/2024 Employees, Students

With the impending arrival of Hurricane Helene or its remnants in North Carolina tomorrow, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University will move to Condition 1, reduced operations, at midnight tonight. Instruction will be delivered only online for Friday, Sept. 27 – no in-person classes during the day or in the evening on Friday.

Gov. Roy Cooper has declared a state of emergency for North Carolina in anticipation of flooding, tornadoes and landslides. Forecasters say some areas in western North Carolina could see more than a foot of rain over the next 24 hours.

In Guilford County, potential impacts include downed trees, gusting winds, strong rain and isolated tornadoes.

Under Condition 1, the university remains open, but certain non‐mandatory operations may be reduced due to more limited staff. Mandatory employees must report to or remain at work. All other employees have the option to report late, leave early or not work at all. Employees must use leave for any work time missed, unless authorized to work off site or the Governor issues an order permitting leave.

Faculty should move Friday classes to online instruction or use an alternate assignment. Faculty should also communicate expectations to students as soon as possible today.

Where possible, supervisors should support remote work or other alternative work plans. Employees, be sure to be in contact with your supervisors if you are unclear regarding work on Friday.

Guilford County is expected to feel peak effects of the storm between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m. on Friday; forecasters project that that Helene will move out of the area by mid-afternoon.

Visit North Carolina A&T’s Emergency Preparedness website for tips and best practices on how to get ready for a storm or other hazard.

Please continue to check university channels for further announcements as more information becomes available.
