College of Engineering

Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering

Civil engineers specialize in the planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of public infrastructures such as buildings, dams, bridges, harbors, power facilities, pollution control, facilities, water supply, and transportation systems. They are trained in the key areas addressing both the physical and naturally built environment such as structural systems, geotechnical, transportation, environmental and water resources, and construction. Civil Engineers work with other engineers to typically work in areas that serve the public sector. N.C. A&T’s Civil Engineering Program was established in 1985. The first graduates completed their degrees in 1990. The program was first accredited in 1990 by Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). Our program has consistently maintained ABET accreditation and completed the last ABET general review in 2019.

Accreditation

The program of study leading to the B.S. in Civil Engineering (BSCE) is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET (http://www.abet.org).

ABET Program Educational Objectives

The objectives of the BSCE program are to produce:

  1. graduates employed as civil engineers with designations of at least Engineer-in-Training (EIT) and will demonstrate the ability to work productively in the main areas of civil engineering.
  2. graduates who demonstrate the ability to function effectively on intra-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary teams or be in the process of completing post-baccalaureate studies or expanding their proficiency in civil engineering.
  3. graduates who continue to learn and adapt to changing technologies, procedures and concepts in civil engineering.
  4. graduates who demonstrate that they possess the skills and knowledge necessary to function effectively in roles of leadership and service in the communities where they will live and work,and that they are contributing to the welfare, quality of life, protection, and advancement of the community.

ABET Student Outcomes

The student outcomes, measured in terms of the knowledge and skills the graduates of the BSCE program are expected to demonstrate at graduation:

  1. an ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics;
  2. an ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors;
  3. an ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences;
  4. an ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts;
  5. an ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives;
  6. an ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions; and
  7. an ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.
