There are two pathways under the Master of Science in Civil Engineering (MSCE) Degrees: 

  • MSCE – Civil  Engineering Pathways. Topics: Structure, Environmental, Water Resources, Construction, Transportation, Geotechnical, others
  • MSCE – Architectural Engineering Pathways. Topics: HVAC Simulation and Smart Control, Lighting Analytics, Digital Twin, Construction Engineering and Automation, Energy Modeling, Responsive AI, Robotics Construction, AI in Participatory Urban Planning, AR/VR, others

Additional Admission Requirements 

Unconditional admission requires undergraduate degree from an ABET accredited Civil Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or Environmental Engineering program.

Degree Requirements 

Total credit hours: 30 

Thesis option 

Core courses (9 credits): 
  • CIEN 700, 702, Advanced Mathematics course (CIEN approved) 
  • CIEN electives (9 credits): Take 9 credits of additional CIEN 600-799 courses with approval of advisor 
  • Electives (6 credits): Take 6 credits from CIEN 600-799 or other departments with approval of advisor 
  • Thesis (CIEN 797: 6 credits)
  • Pass thesis defense
  • CIEN seminar (CIEN 792) 

Project option 

  • Core courses (9 credits): CIEN 700, 702, Advanced Mathematics course (CIEN approved) 
  • CIEN electives (9 credits): Take 9 credits of additional CIEN 600-799 courses with approval of advisor 
  • Electives (9 credits): Take 9 credits from CIEN 600-799 or other departments with approval of advisor 
  • Project (CIEN 796: 3 credits) 
  • CIEN seminar (CIEN 792)

  • Systems Engineering Core (9 credits): SYEN 605, 710, 715 
  • Systems Engineering Electives (9 credits): Take 3 courses from: CIEN 614, 670, 785 (special topics) or other CIEN 600-799 courses with approval of advisor
  • Elective (3 credits): Take 3 credits from CIEN 600-799 or other departments with approval of advisor
  • CIEN seminar (CIEN 792)
