Health Insurance Requirement
ACADEMIC YEAR 2026 - 2027
Students who are taking 6 or more credit hours (main campus or distance learning) must provide proof of health insurance coverage in order to avoid having a BCBS Student Blue health insurance premium charged to their student account. The only exception to the 6-credit hour stipulation is if your Major is considered a Distance Learning major or if you are non-degree seeking.
Students who do not provide verifiable health insurance information before the waiver deadline will be enrolled automatically in the UNC endorsed student health insurance plan and will be billed for the semester. The BCBS Student Blue health insurance policy is part of a UNC system-wide plan, negotiated each year through the insurance agent for the state of North Carolina.
The waiver deadline for the Fall 2026 semester is September 10. If the deadline is missed, you will be charged for the Spring Student insurance premium and default enrolled!
Who is required to enroll in the UNC System student health insurance plan?
- Are you enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours?
- Are you required to pay the campus student health fee?
Effective August 1, 2026 - July 31, 2027
The student health insurance structure has been updated to streamline coverage options and adjust seasonal rates. The previous multi-tier "Value" and "Premium" options have been consolidated into a single, comprehensive standard plan.
The updated per-semester premium rates are as follows:
-
Undergraduate Student Plan: $1,312.00 per semester
-
Graduate Student Plan: $2,366.50 per semester
These premium charges will appear automatically on your student account statement alongside standard tuition and fees. Please note that enrollment in the Spring semester plan automatically extends to include full coverage throughout the Summer term.
The insurance coverage listed below are the highlights of the UNC Sponsored Student Insurance Plan:
- If the deadline is missed to waive then the student will have a chance to appeal this decision and provide active coverage to still waive out of the insurance. You can appeal on the student website
