NCAT JAZZ (Ensembles)

The Jazz Ensemble includes three groups that perform a wide range of music for large audiences at different events.

Big Band

The University Jazz Ensemble (aka "The Big Band") is the premier and official jazz ensemble of N.C. A&T State University. Literature performed includes big band classics, New Orleans style traditional jazz, Latin and African styles, contemporary arrangements and original compositions. The ensemble performs a fall and spring concert every semester. In addition to the scheduled concerts, the ensemble also performs throughout the community; travels to other cities within and outside North Carolina; performs in competitions; attends festivals and consortiums; and regularly hosts clinicians to mentor the musicians. The ensemble is comprised of traditional and non-traditional jazz instruments. All talented students are welcome to audition, regardless of instrument.

Jazz Combo

The University Jazz Combo is the “fast attack” unit of the Jazz Ensembles. This group is comprised of highly skilled musicians who are good readers, improvisers and overall performers. Because events are often booked with short notice, these musicians can learn music quickly and/or sightread music during performance and still produce a professional sound. This group is a smaller group usually comprised of 5-7 musicians. Music performed includes swing, bebop, cool jazz, hard bop, jazz fusion, contemporary and modern jazz. Membership in the big band is a prerequisite and corequisite for membership in the jazz combo.

Vocal Jazz Ensemble

The NC A&T Vocal Jazz Ensemble is the “secret weapon” of the jazz ensemble. This group is comprised of the most highly skilled vocalists on campus. Participation requires the ability to sing jazz, R&B, pop, and gospel styles as both soloist and ensemble singer. Vocalists sing 2-to-6-part harmonies. Music performed includes jazz classics, contemporary jazz, and neo-soul. The group size is limited to 8-10 singers, so audition is required for participation.
