Jonathan Martin, J.D., Associate Vice Provost for Transformation Initiatives
Jonathan Martin, associate vice provost for transformation initiatives, is an accomplished higher education leader with more than two decades of experience driving institutional transformation, operational excellence and student success across diverse university settings. In this role, he leads university-wide innovation initiatives, including the establishment of the Transformation Initiatives Office and the successful deployment of Robotic Process Automation (RPA) across multiple divisions to streamline operations and enhance efficiency. His leadership aligns closely with the university’s Preeminence 2030 Strategic Plan, supporting Goal 1: Transformative Engagement and Goal 3: Performance Excellence.
Earlier in his career, Martin served chief of staff and senior adviser to three Chancellors spanning eight years at Winston-Salem State University, where he played a central role in strategic planning, executive communications and cross-functional coordination. His leadership was pivotal in strengthening stakeholder relationships, enhancing governance and advancing initiatives in student retention, STEM education and economic development. Throughout his career, he has consistently bridged academic vision with administrative execution, earning recognition for his ability to mobilize resources, cultivate partnerships and champion innovation.
Martin holds a juris doctor from Duke University School of Law and a bachelor of arts in economics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In addition to his academic credentials, he brings a unique global perspective shaped by consulting and travel experiences in over 25 countries across five continents. This combination of strategic insight, operational expertise, and global fluency positions him as a forward-thinking leader committed to transforming institutions to meet the evolving demands of higher education.

AAngela Smith, executive assistant to associate vice provost for transformation initiatives, holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration and brings over 18 years of progressive administrative experience. She has held key positions across campus, including program assistant, student services specialist and business coordinator. Through these roles, she has developed deep expertise in executive support, operations management and cross-functional collaboration.
In October 2024, Smith joined the Transformation Initiatives Office, where she works closely with Associate Vice Provost Jonathan Martin, to support strategic priorities. In this role, she is eager to enhance operational efficiency, elevate service excellence and support a culture of continuous improvement at all levels of the organization.
Prior to this, Angela served as a student services specialist in the College of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering. She launched her career at North Carolina A&T in 2007 as a travel assistant, providing vital support to the broader university community.
Outside of work, Angela enjoys traveling with her daughter, Kiara, and their six-year-old pit bull, Legend, who serves as both companion and protector.

Nicole Mackie, project manager of transformation initiatives, is a higher education project manager dedicated to driving transformation that advances student success, operational excellence, and socio-economic mobility. In her role with the Transformation Office, she manages strategic initiatives that strengthen graduate and undergraduate enrollment, expand corporate partnerships and integrate innovative solutions like Robotic Process Automation (RPA), AI and personalized student engagement.
With a background in business strategy, project management and communications—enhanced by more than a decade of leadership in sales, marketing and the insurance industry—Mackie brings a unique perspective to higher education transformation. She leverages this expertise to build strong partnerships, streamline operations and design initiatives that connect students with meaningful career opportunities.
Her work includes leading RPA initiatives that reduce administrative barriers, improve efficiency and expand capacity for student-focused services. Passionate about student success, Mackie is driven by a commitment to creating systems and partnerships that open doors, accelerate career opportunities and prepare students to thrive in a rapidly evolving workforce.
Mackie holds a bachelor’s degree in English from Hampton University and an MBA from the University of Arizona. She continues to use her experience in transformation, innovation, and industry engagement to help position N.C. A&T as a national leader in higher education.
