College of Business and Economics

Message from the Chairperson

Welcome to the Department of Business Information Systems and Analytics (BISA)!

Our department offers students the opportunity to become proficient in information technology, information systems, and analytics. These topics are critical for students to understand for two primary reasons:

  1. Information technology and systems are woven into the foundational infrastructure of any organization, regardless of whether it is a small business or global company.
  2. It is vital that information technology and systems are implemented in a way that supports organizational strategy through the ability to make decisions based on the analysis of data.

Students who major in these fields will need to be lifelong learners since technology is in a state of constant change. The goal of BISA faculty is to assist students in preparing for an ever-changing workforce so that they can adapt and become innovative professionals in the field.

There are many opportunities for careers in these fields.  Many people think of IT as being a compute programmer, but there are many more avenues depending on your area of interest:  database management, website developer, IT security expert, network manager, business analyst, etc. See our page on “Skills and Jobs” for additional information.

Working with technology and systems can be challenging.  It involves a lot of troubleshooting skills.  For example, if a semi-colon is in the wrong place, an entire computer program may not work at all. The same holds true for business analytics. When analyzing data, one must be very careful that it is accurate because business decisions are relying on the data provided.

We expect that to be successful in our programs, students need to be:

  • resilient in overcoming obstacles
  • intellectually and technologically curious
  • detail-oriented and analytical
  • creative and innovative
  • good time managers
  • engaged in coursework (reflect upon and digest the material)
  • mindful of academic integrity
  • willing to seek help when needed

Thank you for exploring our site. Please let us know if you have any questions about how BISA can be the home for your major.

Sincerely,
Sherrie L. Drye, Ph.D.
