The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences is accredited by the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (https://www.aafcs.org/home). AAFCS provides leadership and support to professionals who work to assist individuals, families and communities in making informed decisions about their well-being, relationships and resources to achieve optimal quality of life.
The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences continues to attract students who are interested in being leaders and trailblazers in fields that enhance the lives of individuals, families and communities. The Department offers Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degrees in
- Child Development and Family Studies with a concentration in Child Development and Family Relations
- Child Development and Family Studies with a concentration in Child Development Early Education and Family Studies (B-K)
- Family and Consumer Sciences with a concentration in Consumer Sciences
- Family and Consumer Sciences with a concentration in Fashion Merchandising and Design
- Food and Nutritional Sciences with a concentration in Human Nutrition [cognates in Nutrition and Pre-Medicine Nutrition]
- Food and Nutritional Sciences with a concentration in Food Science
The two largest programs in the department are Child Development and Family Relations and Fashion Merchandising and Design.
The Food Science program is approved by the Higher Education Review Board of the Institute for Food Technologists (IFT)
The Child Development and Family Studies program is the only program at an HBCU offering the Certificate in Family Life Education (CFLE), approved by NCFR.
The Child Development Early Education and Family Studies (B-K) program is accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).
The Family Financial Planning Certificate program is approved by the Certified Financial Planners (CFP) Board of Standards.
The Human Lactation Graduate Certificate program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
