Studying abroad is an investment in your personal, academic, and professional growth. With thoughtful planning, it can be both accessible and affordable. Many programs are comparable in cost to a semester at N.C. A&T, and various funding options are available to support your international journey.
Financial Aid
Most financial aid, such as grants, loans, and scholarships, can be applied to semester and summer study abroad programs that are approved by the OIA. However, financial aid is not applicable to faculty-led programs, making early financial planning essential for those considering short-term experiences.
Key points to consider:
Eligible Aid: Grants, GI Bill benefits, scholarships, and loans can be used for approved study abroad programs.
Ineligible Aid: Work-study funds and athletic scholarships cannot be applied to study abroad expenses.
Disbursement Timing: Financial aid is typically released 10 days before the start of your study abroad program.
Covered Expenses: Tuition, room and board, and program fees are generally covered by financial aid.
For detailed information on how your specific financial aid package applies to study abroad, consult with the Financial Aid Office.
Out-of-Pocket Expenses
While financial aid covers many costs, some expenses are typically out-of-pocket. These may include:
Passport fees
Visa application fees
Airfare
Vaccinations
International health insurance
Program application and confirmation fees
Housing deposits
Utilize the NCAT Study Abroad Budget Worksheet to estimate these costs and develop a realistic financial plan. OIA staff are available to assist you in identifying cost-effective programs and providing personalized funding guidance.
Scholarships
OIA offers scholarships based on demonstrated financial need and the overall strength of the student's application. Applications are reviewed holistically by a scholarship committee using a structured evaluation and ranking process. Strong applications clearly articulate the student's goals, preparedness, and reasons for studying abroad.
Students may apply for OIA scholarship once per academic year and may seek assistance from the University Writing Center to enhance their application essays.

Fundraising Tips & Recommendations
1. Start Early
Begin your fundraising efforts as soon as you are accepted into a program. The earlier you start, the more time you’ll have to meet your financial goals.
2. Share Your Story
Tell people why studying abroad matters to you. Highlight where you’re going, what you plan to study, and how this experience aligns with your goals. Be clear, authentic, and appreciative.
3. Use Online Fundraising Platforms
Crowdfunding sites are an effective way to collect donations and share your campaign widely:
If you’re strong in a subject, consider offering tutoring services to peers or local students as a way to raise funds. It’s a safe, productive, and mutually beneficial option.
5. Reach Out to Local Support Networks
Contact community groups, religious organizations, fraternities or sororities, or local businesses. Many are willing to support students pursuing educational experiences abroad. Be professional and clear about your goals.
6. Stay Engaged and Show Gratitude
Keep your donors updated on your journey and thank them regularly. You can share milestones, photos, or reflections through social media, email, or a blog.
7. Combine Fundraising with Scholarships
Fundraising is most effective when used alongside scholarships and financial aid. Be sure to apply for OIA and external scholarships and use fundraising to close any remaining gaps.
