A thriving undergraduate research environment depends on two key elements: a scholarly faculty and a commitment to mentoring students as research partners.

Scholarly Faculty

Faculty scholarship forms the foundation of impactful undergraduate research. For students to gain the full benefit of these experiences, it is vital that faculty are active and current in their disciplines. Institutions that embrace a teacher-scholar model—where teaching excellence and ongoing peer-recognized scholarship are both valued—provide a strong framework for undergraduate research to flourish.

At NC A&T, we recognize that engaging undergraduates in research is most meaningful when guided by faculty who are themselves creators of new knowledge, innovation, and creative works.

Commitment to Mentorship and Inclusion

While a scholarly faculty is essential, it is not enough on its own. Faculty must also be willing and intentional in involving undergraduates in the research enterprise. Not every project or line of inquiry will involve students, but a culture that values undergraduate participation in scholarly work is vital.

We encourage our faculty to:

  • Create accessible pathways for students to join research efforts

  • Embrace students as co-learners and collaborators

  • Reflect on and challenge assumptions about who is “research ready”

  • Integrate research into the classroom through Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs) when possible

NC A&T is committed to supporting faculty as mentors and partners in undergraduate research. This includes providing resources, professional development, and recognition for effective mentoring practices.
