Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering

The mission of the Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) program at North Carolina A&T State University is to prepare students for the broad practice of mechanical engineering and for graduate education in mechanical engineering and the many related fields such as materials engineering and aerospace engineering. 

The program of study leading to the B.S. in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET ( refer to the Undergraduate Handbook

ABET Program Educational Objectives 
Within a few years of graduating from the Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering Program, graduates are expected to: 

  • perform effectively in mechanical engineering related positions in industry or in graduate/professional schools
  • demonstrate proficiency in teamwork and leadership skills for solving problems
  • be active in their professional societies and in their communities
  • engage in professional development through lifelong learning

ABET Student Outcomes 
The student outcomes, measured in terms of the knowledge and skills the graduates of the BSME program are expected to demonstrate at graduation are:

  • an ability to identify, formulate and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science and mathematics
  • an ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental and economic factors
  • an ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences
  • an ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental and societal contexts
  • an ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks and meet objectives
  • an ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions
  • an ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies
  • an ability to apply multivariate calculus to solve engineering problems
  • an ability to apply models, analyze and design physical systems
