Research Interests

Research in Billing’s group involves the use of spectroscopic techniques for atmospheric applications: The focus is laboratory measurement of optical and chemical properties of African biomass burning (BB) aerosol to understand their role on climate, regional weather, air quality, and health.

LABORATORY STUDIES TO
1) Understand how relative humidity (RH) photochemical and dark aging, morphology, burn conditions, and fuel type influence the optical and chemical properties of BB aerosols produced from sub-Saharan Africa Biomass fuels
(2) Measure emission factors of pollutants from different combustion sources in the US and Africa.determine the drivers of toxicity in BB emissions
(3) Model health impacts of biomass burning and trash burning in Africa

MODELING: Fitting model results from T-Matrix and RDG theory to extract refractive indices using TEM images of filter samples

FIELD WORK: Study of power plant and wildfire emissions impact on air quality in the US and Africa.
