N.C. A&T School of Nursing History

In 1953, the School of Nursing at North Carolina A&T State University began a long history of preparing Aggie nurse leaders. From the United States Armed Services, to health care systems with national recognition across North Carolina and the world, Aggie nurses are contributing to the health care of the nation.

Sixty-five years later we continue our mission to provide an environment of academic excellence in which to educate and prepare students to become professional nurses committed to lifelong learning, scholarly inquiry, civility and service which will enhance the health and wellness of diverse communities. Over the past 65 years the nursing profession has seen many changes and the School of Nursing has maintained core values of accountability, responsibility and professionalism, to prepare the foundation of graduates for entry into nursing practice.

Beginning with 15 graduates in 1957, the School of Nursing has educated and trained professional nurses with a passion for meeting the needs of individuals in our ever-evolving world. From a twenty-one-day clinical assignment on the tuberculosis unit over 65 years ago, to real life clinical scenarios in the state-of-the-art Union Square Campus, the School has stayed abreast of the changes in health care. The School has continued to develop nurses for the workforce needs of today.
