The College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (CAHSS) at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University invites the university community to honor the life and academic legacy of Frances Ward-Johnson, Ph.D., at a memorial service Friday, Nov. 15, at 3 p.m. in Auditorium 218 of the General Classroom Building on campus.

Dr. Ward-Johnson served as CAHSS’s dean from 2018 until July of this year, a six-year tenure during which she significantly advanced the college's mission and impact. Under her leadership, CAHSS expanded its academic offerings, including the launch of its first Ph.D. program, established a Center of Excellence for Social Justice, and nurtured meaningful community connections through a town-and-gown gala series.

During Dr. Ward-Johnson’s tenure, CAHSS achieved national distinction as the leading producer of African American graduates in Journalism and Mass Communication and Liberal Arts in the United States. Dr. Ward-Johnson, who served as a faculty member in the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication before becoming dean, was a two-time graduate of N.C. A&T, holding both bachelor’s and master’s degrees. She later earned her doctoral degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and completed advanced management studies at Harvard University’s Institute of Management and Leadership in Education.
