résumé and cover letter guidelines

Career fairWhen preparing to pitch yourself to recruiters, it is important to consider the attributes they look for in ideal candidates. Problem-solving skills and teamwork abilities are not only some of the most desired attributes, but they are as important as a high GPA. Other attributes that are recommended to include on your résumé are written communication skills, leadership abilities, and a strong work ethic. Prior work (internship, co-op, volunteer) experience is also something many recruiters search for when looking through résumés and cover letters.

The résumé is a concise, well-developed document that showcases an individual’s experiences, skills, education, and achievements. It is most commonly used to secure an employment interview. The résumé may also be used when applying for scholarships, graduate or professional school, or memberships into professional organizations.

Cover letters are introductions to your skills and abilities that are related to the position that interests you. Cover letters should speak to your skills and abilities in a narrative form; it is not a repeat of the statements from the résumé. Cover letters do get read by the search committee or hiring manager, so you want the document to stand out in a good way.
