Community Gardening in North Carolina

What are community gardens? A community garden is any place where people come together to grow plants. They vary in look depending on where they are and who they are for. Some have in ground rows of plants while others have raised beds high enough to make bending over unnecessary. They can be public orchards or gardens designed to attract bees and other pollinators. They can be located at hospitals, retirement homes, city parks, churches, or on empty lots. Some are decorated with art sculpture and others with food forests that include fruit and nut trees, shrubs and vines!

All community gardens provide a communal space where community members come together and share their stories while working the soil side by side. Gardens provide much needed healthy food choices that are affordable and close to home. In addition to fresh wholesome foods, they grow wellness, community identity and friendships.
