Maintaining J-1 Visa Status

J-1 Visa Maintaining Status
- Attend the mandatory orientation
- Maintain up-to-date immigration documents at all times.
- Form DS-2019
- Passport - must be current at least six (6) months in advance
- 1-94 Record
- Should be kept in a secure place at all times.
- Confirm that the I-94 indicates J-1 visa status and "D/S" for Duration of Status.
- If your I-94 or that of your spouse (dependents) has a specific end date, you must consult the OIA immediately upon check-in.
- Maintain appropriate health coverage for themselves and any J-2 dependents

Insurance plans must meet the minimum requirements required by federal regulations governing the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program:
- $100,000 per accident or illness;
- $500 maximum deductible per illness;
- $50,000 provision for medical evacuation;
- $25,000 repatriation of remains
- Refrain from any unauthorized employment
- Any employment activity must be approved, in writing, by OIA staff before it begins
- Volunteering may be considered employment for immigration purposes, consult with OIA staff before beginning any volunteer activity.
- Submit timely extension requests to OIA, if necessary.
- Complete the DS-2019 program extension request form and email it to oia@ncat.edu.
- Complete top portion of Academic/Faculty Advisor Recommendation form and submit to your advisor
