A Special Fellowship Honoring a Proud Legacy in Leadership and Service

Prospective graduate students are invited to apply for the Woodland Ellroy Hall Fellowship. Note that this fellowship is only offered to students starting a new program in the Fall semester. Please see additional eligibility requirements below. 

What is the Woodland Ellroy Hall Fellowship?

The Woodland Ellroy Hall Fellowship is an academic merit-based fellowship program at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University for master's and doctoral students who are committed to excellence in scholarship, professional capabilities, and leadership in a research university setting. 

The Fellowship is named in honor of Woodland Ellroy Hall (1909-2004), the first student to earn a graduate degree from North Carolina A&T State University in 1941. Hall, a native Virginian, earned a bachelor’s degree in agriculture from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, a master’s degree in agricultural education at North Carolina A&T, and a second master’s at Columbia University. His Master's thesis at N.C. A&T was titled "A Study of the Needs In Vocational Agricultural Education of Negroes In Gates County, North Carolina." Hall also did doctoral work at Pennsylvania State University. Hall served as a principal in Manteo, Burlington and Dunn, NC. The State of North Carolina honors the legacy of Woodland Ellroy Hall’s exemplary service and leadership through this scholarship program. 

Fellowship Award

The Woodland Hall Fellowship is a one-year award that provides a $18,000 stipend, full tuition support, fees and health insurance for new doctoral students and a $13,500 stipend, full tuition support, fees and health insurance for new master’s students. 

Eligibility

To be eligible for selection as a Woodland E. Hall Fellow, an applicant must satisfy all of the following criteria:

• Must submit an N.C. A&T graduate admissions application for Fall 2024 (this award is only for students entering a new program in the Fall semester)
• Must satisfy all requirements for admission into student's intended program
• Must exhibit outstanding academic achievement
• Must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
• Must be able to participate in a virtual interview in mid-to-late February, if selected as a Finalist
• Must submit Woodland Hall Fellowship Application Form by the January 15 deadline (the Application form requires you to upload a CV/Resume, unofficial transcript, letter of recommendation, and personal statement)
  
  

Selection Criteria

Recipients of the Woodland E. Hall Fellowship will be selected on the basis of academic merit and potential for academic and professional success. Financial need shall not be a consideration. Strong candidates will have a record of outstanding academic performance. Strong candidates will also demonstrate potential to contribute significantly to the scholarly community at N.C. A&T.

Application Process

In order to be considered for the Woodland E. Hall Fellowship, you must submit the Woodland Hall Application Form by January 15. Note that the Application Form requires you to upload the following documents: a CV or Resume, an unofficial transcript, a letter of recommendation, and a personal statement (up to 2 double-spaced pages, in which you discuss your academic/professional background, your motivation to pursue graduate studies at N.C. A&T, and your academic/career goals). You cannot save information on the form. Please prepare all materials and submit them together when you are ready.

Expectations for Recipients

Recipients of the Woodland E. Hall Fellowship must adhere to the following requirements:

• Must enter a new graduate program in Fall semester
• Must enroll full-time and remain in good academic standing
• Must maintain membership and active participation in the Society of Woodland Ellroy Hall Fellows Program (additional information below)
  
  

The Society of Woodland E. Hall Fellows Program

Creating an Interdisciplinary Community of Leaders, Researchers, and Scholars

The North Carolina A&T State University Woodland E. Hall Fellowship Program is designed to enhance the leadership, knowledge, and research skills of our graduate scholars in career readiness preparation for local, regional, and global impact. Fellowship recipients will become members of the Society of Woodland Hall Fellows. 

The Society of Woodland E. Hall Fellowship Program strives to:

• Increase the core interdisciplinary scholarly research skills and knowledge of graduate Student-Scholars to ensure familiarity with the professional expectations of graduates of a research-intensive, doctoral university;
• Increase career readiness and job placement of graduates by providing opportunities to enrich their resumes and CVs with transferable skills and well-rounded professionalism; and
• Encourage the formation of a community of peers for support, networking, information sharing, and collegiality.
