How to Cite Sources
Resources for Citing Sources
The purpose of citing sources is to give credit to the author(s) and to ensure that your work can be verified. The first step is to choose a citation style. Your assignment or discipline usually dictates the style that you need to use. Manuals for the most common citation styles are available at the Reference Desk. Many of the library's online resources will allow you to generate citations in a variety of styles, but it's important to check them for correct formatting. Here are some online resources that you can use as well:
- Bluford Library Citation Guide: this guide contains resources that will help you with your citations, including how to find different style guides in the library.
- OWL Purdue: the online writing center at Purdue University provides helpful guides to building APA and MLA citation.
- Refworks: a citation management platform that is ideal for larger projects such as theses and dissertations. It is available to students, faculty, and staff. You will need to create a username and password in order to use Refworks. The library offers workshops on how to use Refworks to manage your citations.
