Vision and Mission
The vision of the Department of Biology is to be a premier science department, advancing students toward graduate and professional degrees and toward successful careers in the biological sciences. The mission of the Department of Biology is to train students in biological research, and professional health and other science careers through innovative teaching, research engagement, mentoring, and enrichment opportunities to produce competent, competitive, and confident leaders in the global scientific community. Specifically, its programs are designed to enhance the intellectual and creative abilities of all individuals that it serves by fostering lifelong learning, inquiry and self-evaluative leadership.
Points of Pride
Pathways for the future - Numerous graduates from our department are routinely accepted each year into Ph.D. and master's degree programs; MD/DO, Physician Assistant, and PharmD programs; and into positions across industry and education.
Opportunities for research - The Department of Biology is actively engaged in grant-supported research involving both faculty and students, with research areas including cellular and molecular biology, disease, genetics, microbiology, immunology, biotechnology, bioinformatics, physiology, evolution, toxicology and health disparities research.
Community of learning - The Department of Biology is the largest science department at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, having more than 500 undergraduate students and more than 20 graduate students at the master's and Ph.D. levels. Resources for learning include both a newly renovated computer lab and a microbiology lab in support of students' learning experiences.
History of Department
The Department of Biology was first organized as an academic unit in 1929, and has had robust involvements in the research and teaching mission of the university. Currently, the Department of Biology has active offerings in terms of both undergraduate and graduate degree programs, and is the largest STEM department on N.C. A&T's campus and the largest science department in the College of Science and Technology.
