Monkeypox Guidance

  • Monkeypox Guidance: Monkeypox is spread through contact with infected body fluids (saliva, fluid from lesions), skin to skin contact, touching items (such as clothing or linens) that previously touched the infectious rash or body fluids, and respiratory secretions during prolonged face-to-face contact. Kissing, cuddling, or having sexual relations with an infected person can lead to viral transmission.
  • PREVENTION: Avoid close skin-to-skin contact, sexual intimacy, kissing, hugging, or cuddling with anyone with a vesicular rash appearing to be monkeypox. Avoid sharing eating utensils, bed linen, or clothes of someone who has monkeypox. Wash your hands before eating or touching your face, and after using the bathroom.
  • SYMPTOMS: Extreme fatigue, fever, headache, sore throat, cough, and swollen lymph nodes. Shortly after symptoms, a rash will appear that may be painful and itchy. Lesions may appear all over the body or located to a specific area such as the genital or buttocks. Sometimes rash is the only symptom. Symptoms can last 2-4 weeks.
  • ISOLATION: There is no designated place on-campus for isolation for Monkeypox. We encourage the infected person to return home until the lesions have completely healed
  • EVALUATION WITH TESTING AND TREATMENT: Available at the Student Health Center Monday-Friday 8a-6pm. You may walk-in to be seen by a provider or schedule an appointment online Online Student Portal (ncat.edu)
