  1. Can academic colleges/school, departments or faculty members apply mask mandates if employees or students feel uncomfortable?

  1. No. The UNC System has issued a mask-optional requirement. Employees and students are welcome to wear masks if they prefer, but mandates are no longer in place.

  2. What should I do if a student is in my class and appears sick?

    Students have been advised to report to the Student Health Center if they are experiencing symptoms or have been exposed to COVID-19. COVID-19 testing will still be conducted at the Student Health Center and the 5-7-10 isolation protocol will be followed.

  3. How can we protect ourselves in the classroom, given the length and size of our classrooms?

    You are free to practice self-care options, such as wearing a mask in all indoor spaces if you choose.

  4. What should be our response to students and parents who are uncomfortable with the mask-optional practice?

    Students may elect to wear a mask at all times.

  5. If faculty and/or students are uncomfortable with the mask-optional requirement, may we return to remote delivery of course instruction?

    No. We returned to face-to-face instruction in Fall 2021. Remote delivery is not approved, except in extenuating circumstances requiring the approval of the department chair and the dean.

  6. If I am unvaccinated, will I be granted an exception to the mask-optional policy to allow me to require masks to be worn in my classes?

    If you are unvaccinated, we encourage you to get vaccinated. If you have an underlying medical condition making it less safe to be vaccinated, we encourage you to wear a mask in class.

  7. Do we have the option to phase in the mask-optional requirement to allow for more planning?

    The mask-optional requirement is effective March 7, 2022.
