Student Insurance FAQs

  1. Why has the mandatory health insurance policy been instituted?
The university has recommended that all students have health insurance. The high cost of health care in the United States presents a serious health and financial burden on our students and their families. Without adequate health insurance, unexpected medical expenses could determine your ability to remain enrolled at the university. The new mandatory requirement for student health insurance coverage will assist students in maintaining good health which is important for academic success.
  2. Do I have to purchase the university student insurance plan?
No. Students are not required to purchase the university-sponsored health insurance plan if they are covered under an alternative insurance plan. These students covered under an alternative insurance plan have the option to waive out of the university insurance. Unless the student submits a waiver and proof of alternative health insurance coverage, he or she will pay the billed premium and be enrolled in the university-sponsored health insurance plan.
  3. How do I waive? Please visit BCBSNC.COM/NCAT.

  4. Do I have to verify my insurance each semester?  Yes. You will be required to either waive or enroll in the student insurance every semester. Please refer to the waive/enroll section for instructions.

  5. How often do I have to waive the mandatory insurance plan? You must waive every fall and every spring semester that you are taking 6 or more on-campus credit hours.
  6. How can I determine if my waiver request has been approved? If the waiver is approved or denied, the student will receive an e-mail from BCBSNC. If the waiver is denied, the student will be given an opportunity to reapply and if the waiver is not approved by the deadline of waive/enroll the student will be default enrolled in the Student Blue Insurance plan.

  7. Do I file my own insurance claims?
If you have the university student insurance plan or your own private insurance, and receive services from the Alvin V. Blount Jr. Student Health Center, we will file your claim for you as a courtesy. Services that are covered by your health plan will be paid directly to the Student Health Center by your insurance company. Any patient responsibility will be communicated via text and/email. We do not file secondary insurances.
