On behalf of the Theatre Arts Faculty, staff and students, I welcome you to North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. As your Theatre Program Director, it is my distinct pleasure to facilitate the beginning of your BFA Professional Theatre Training as you begin the journey of mastering the craft of acting and/or the nuts and bolts of Theatre technology. The Theatre Arts Program at this fine institution is an accredited BFA Theatre Arts program by the National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST). This past year, our first year acting student Ashton Ross won the coveted national Irene Ryan Scholarship award at the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival in Washington, DC.

Recognized as one of the top undergraduate BFA programs in the country, our graduates have been accepted into some of the most reputable MFA professional theatre graduate programs while also experiencing success on Broadway, Off-Broadway as well as in regional professional theatre, television and film. Twice we have won national titles at the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival and have been invited to perform at the Kennedy Center, in 1983 with Zooman and the Sign and in 1999 with David Richmond. Two of our former acting alums, Natasha Williams and Zonya Love Johnson, starred on Broadway as Sophia and Celie (replacing R&B singer Fantasia) respectively in The Color Purple. In addition, we have established a strong professional relationship with the British American Dramatic Academy in London which has afforded many of our students to receive some of the best global classical training available. Our most recent mainstage production of Tarell Alvin McCraney’s In the Red and Water was accepted as an official selection at the 2017 National Black Theatre Festival in Winston Salem, North Carolina.

Comprised of some of the best nationally and internationally renowned faculty, we are excited about this valued time that you will be spending with us. The Paul Robeson Theatre and The Acting Studio are your laboratories where you will be provided with innumerable opportunities including but not limited to acting, directing, designing, house managing, marketing, technical, make-up and costume assignments. The beauty of being a theatre artist is that you are allowed to collaborate with fellow creative artists who are just as passionate as you are about this sacred work. The Theatre Arts Program at North Carolina A&T State University is the home of the National Award-Winning Richard B. Harrison Players. We are committed to helping you become the best disciplined theatre artist you can be while also providing top-notch educational opportunities and the most absolutely brilliant theatre productions to the campus community, greater Greensboro and the NC Triad Region.
